What Actually Opened On Burnet This Year: An Allandale Resident's Field Guide

For years the shorthand for Allandale dining was a familiar loop. Fonda San Miguel for anniversaries, Epicerie for a slow Saturday, Peached Tortilla when someone from out of town wanted a story to bring home. That loop is still intact. What has changed, quietly, over the last twelve months is where the new energy sits on the map. The stretch of Burnet Road between roughly 6700 and 8300 has absorbed most of 2026's openings, and it is now doing something the corridor has not done in a long time: pulling national attention north of 45th Street.

This is a guide for people who already live here. No relocation talking points, no median price detours. Just what opened, what closed, and where the weeknight plan should probably go next.

The Center Of Gravity Moved North

If you drew a heat map of new Allandale-area openings from late 2025 through spring 2026, it would cluster tightly above Anderson Lane rather than around the older Rosedale-adjacent stretch. Mama Betty's and Foxtail Lounge opened up at 7001 Burnet Road, Khanm Kitchen rolled into 1901 West Anderson Lane with Kurdish and Iraqi cuisine, DonDon Japanese Fire Bowl began serving donburi rice bowls from 6701 Burnet, Tancho Sushi opened in The Grove at 2621 Perseverance Drive, and the trailer favorite Wow Poke opened its first brick-and-mortar at 7433 Burnet. Pete's Cajun Seafood also rolled into the trailer park at 5000 Burnet.

That is six new food destinations inside a stretch you can drive in under four minutes. For a neighborhood whose dining reputation was built one restaurant at a time over decades, that is a compressed timeline.

The Recognition That Actually Matters

New openings are easy to list. Harder to explain is what happened to Allandale's older guard while all this was going on. Two things worth knowing:

The New York Times named the ketan hitam, a black rice porridge, at Yeni's Fusion at 8315 Burnet as one of the country's best desserts. Matt Odam named Barley Swine Austin's best restaurant, and Barley Swine also earned a Michelin star. Odam's Top 40 also included Bartlett's, Bufalina Due, Epicerie, and Foreign & Domestic.

Read the geography of that list. Yeni's is at 8315 Burnet. Barley Swine sits on the same corridor. Epicerie and Foreign & Domestic are longstanding neighborhood anchors. When a national paper flags a specific dessert on Burnet and a Michelin inspector agrees the block deserves a star, the neighborhood's food story stops being purely local. It becomes something residents can casually recommend to visiting friends without a caveat.

What Closed, And Why It Matters

A dining scene turns over. The closures from the same window are worth naming because they clear real estate for what came next.

Bird Dog Pit BBQ closed at 4707 Burnet, ChefSuite went belly-up at 8023 Burnet, Jan Chi Korean Cuisine closed at 3808 Spicewood Springs, and the original El Mercado on South First closed, leaving the Mercado at 7414 Burnet the last Mercado standing.

Two openings arrived in the wings but had not fully launched as of early 2026. Roya at 7858 Shoal Creek and Tzintzuntzan at 2302 West North Loop appeared to be mere days from opening, one Persian and one drawing on Barragán-era Mexican design. Both are worth watching if you keep a running list of places to try.

Then there is the Gusto and Gràcia situation. The restaurants missed payroll at the end of the year, signs on the doors on January 1st said they were closing, and employees were considering filing a lawsuit. Whatever the final outcome, that address is one to check before making a reservation.

The Grocery Shift Nobody Is Talking About Enough

Restaurants get the coverage. The bigger structural change on West Anderson may be groceries.

Wheatsville Food Co-op announced it would open two new locations in Hyde Park and Allandale provided it raised enough funds, with the Allandale location planned for 2917 W. Anderson Lane, currently occupied by Fresh Plus Grocery. The reason for the move traces back to a decision the co-op did not want to make. Wheatsville had announced in 2024 that it might have to close its then 43-year-old location at 3101 Guadalupe because of Light Rail construction access problems, sales that had halved over the last decade, and a building needing major repairs, with the Guadalupe lease expiring in 2026.

Meanwhile, on Burnet itself, Austin Select Market, which took over Thom's Market, rebranded as Fin's First Market in honor of the owner, Rofin Maknojia. Small grocery in Allandale is being rewritten in real time.

If you have been on autopilot at Fresh Plus for a decade, the store you walk into a year from now may have a very different name on the door and a different set of house brands on the shelf. Worth planning around.

A Weeknight Plan, Concretely

The reason to know all of this is not trivia. It is that a Tuesday night decision in Allandale in July 2026 looks different than it did in July 2024. A short rewrite of the standard rotation:

• Quick pickup within ten minutes of home: DonDon at 6701 Burnet for a donburi bowl, or Wow Poke at 7433 Burnet if you finally want to sit down at the trailer version you have been ordering from for years.
• A cuisine that was not really represented in the corridor before: Khanm Kitchen at 1901 West Anderson for Kurdish and Iraqi cooking.
• A birthday dinner where you want to know the food is being taken seriously: Barley Swine, now with a Michelin star, or Yeni's Fusion at 8315 Burnet if you plan to end with the ketan hitam the Times flagged.
• A patio-and-margaritas Friday with the family: Mama Betty's at 7001 Burnet, with a $7 frozen margarita and select half-price appetizers from 3 to 6pm Monday through Friday.
• Late, quiet, adults only: Foxtail Lounge next door, or SoSu on Burnet while the soft opening menu is still small and easy to get into.

The Older Anchors Still Anchor

None of this argues against the places that made Allandale worth living in before. Epicerie Cafe & Grocery still puts a French-Louisiana spin on breakfast classics like coffee, muffins, eggs benedict, and pancakes. Fonda San Miguel still celebrates interior Mexican cuisine and still draws culinary connoisseurs, art lovers, and visiting celebrities. Yard Bar has served cold beers, food, and treats for pups on Burnet since opening in 2015. The Statesman's best bars list included Draught House, Aristocrat Lounge, and LaLa's Little Nugget, all within easy Allandale reach.

The shift is not a replacement. It is a widening. A corridor that used to reward loyalty to a handful of long-tenured spots now also rewards curiosity between 6700 and 8300 Burnet.

What To Watch Through The Rest Of 2026

A few threads to keep an eye on if you like knowing what is coming before it opens:

1. Roya's full launch at 7858 Shoal Creek. Persian fine dining is thin on the ground in this part of town.
2. Tzintzuntzan at 2302 West North Loop, whose design cues suggest something more ambitious than a neighborhood taquería.
3. The Wheatsville build-out on West Anderson, which depends on 3,250 investors joining as owners to move forward on the co-op's stated timeline.
4. Whatever ends up in the 4707 Burnet Bird Dog space and the 8023 ChefSuite space. Two vacancies inside the hottest stretch of the corridor rarely stay vacant long.

The version of Allandale you introduce to a friend who moves here in December will not be the same one you introduced to a friend who moved here in December 2024. That is the point of a neighborhood with mature trees and a live restaurant row. Both keep growing.
